APPLICANT INFORMATION
All R-1 positions for the 2010-2011 academic year for the Internal Medicine Residency Program are selected through The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The UAB Internal Medicine NRMP numbers for Match participation are:
Categorical Track (NRMP # 1007140C0)
3-year Traditional, Primary Care, or Women’s Health Track
Preliminary Track (NRMP # 1007140P0)
1-year Internal Medicine before continuing on into another specialty
IM-ABIM Research Pathway (NRMP # 1007140C2)

Combined Internal Medicine-Medical Genetics Program- For information on the Internal Medicine Genetics Program contact Mr. Scott Austin in Genetics at (205) 966-2916 or e-mail him at saustin@genetics.uab.edu. The Medicine Genetics combined program is a 5-year combined training program focuses on clinical genetics training and research efforts more oriented towards adult genetic disease, while the curriculum prepares graduates for Internal Medicine careers in research, teaching or departmental administration. Successful completion of this training program brings eligibility to become certified by both the American board of Internal Medicine examination and the American Barod of Medical Genetics. Application to the combined program is made via ERAS and through registration with the NRMP. Applicants apply to the Internal Medicine Categorical Track, NRMP # 1007140C0.
Residency Criteria
- Graduation date less than five years from the year that you are applying.
- We do not have a minimal score required for USMLE Step 1 or USMLE Step 2
- USMLE Step 1- You must submit your Step 1 results with your application for your application to be considered by our program.
- USMLE Step 2- A passing USMLE Step 2 score must be posted in ERAS prior to the NRMP rank list submission date for you to be considered for our rank list.
- Due to the highly competitive applications received by our program, any applications received with failed test scores will be more subject to higher review than those who do not.
- For International graduates, we sponsor an H1-B and a J-1 visa.
- For International graduates, you must hold the standard Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate.
- Hands on US Clinical experience is not a requirement for our program, however it is highly preferred. This does not include observerships or research.
APPLYING TO OUR PROGRAM
Only electronic applications via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) are accepted for Internal Medicine residency positions. We do not accept any applications that are mailed or faxed to our office.
U.S. medical students should contact their Dean’s Office for access to the ERAS system. IMG’s must apply for residency through ERAS by contacting the ECFMG (http://www.ecfmg.org/index.html).
We do NOT offer any pre-match positions.

UAB INTERVIEW DAY
You will be invited to attend dinner wtih our residents the night before your interview day. Spouses are invited. You will be provided the restaurant name and phone number prior to your arrival. There will also be a meeting point so that rides can be provided by our residents to dinner.
Our interview begins at 7:00 AM in the Boshell Diabetes Building (BDB) room 344. The Boshell building is located on the UAB campus at the corner of 7th Ave and 18th Street South in downtown Birmingham, directly behind the VA Medical Center. We begin the morning with an introduction from our program director, Dr. Gustavo Heudebert.
At the conclusion of the introduction, applicants will be split into two groups. Due to the limited amount of space in the Boshell building, we send a group to our Faculty Office Towers (FOT) building for their interview day and the other group will remain in the Boshell Building. At 8 AM both groups will attend morning report.
Interviews will be held from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Interviews will take place as follows:
Categorical applicants – One 10-15 minute interview with a program director and one 30 minute interview with a selection committee member.
Preliminary applicants – One 30 minute interview with a chief medical resident.
Medicine – Pediatric applicants – One 30 minute interview with a selection committee member. Your program director interview will happen later in the day when you meet with the Medicine-Pediatrics program.
Program Director interviews will be done by Dr. Gustavo Heudebert, Program Director or Dr. Lisa Willett, Associate Program Director. Our selection committee is made up of select faculty members in the UAB Department of Medicine from all divisions. Also during this time you will be escorted by one of our current residents on a tour through the UAB Medical Center.
From 11:00 AM – Noon applicants will have a choice to tour the VA Medical Center or Cooper Green Mercy Hospital.
At noon, the group will come back to the Boshell building for lunch with some of our current residents. Then at 1:00 PM any applicant interested will be provided with a bus tour of the downtown area as well as surrounding suburbs that are popular with our residents for housing.
The interview day will conclude at 2:00 PM.
