A maximum of four preliminary positions are available through the NRMP. Our preliminary interns function identically to categorical interns, except with some small changes in curriculum. Each preliminary intern is allotted an elective month of their choice, which many utilize to gain experience in their prospective fields. One month is also spent in the Emergency Department to fulfill ACGME requirements. We believe that with a strong foundation in Internal Medicine, our preliminary residents go on to excel in their future endeavors.
Schedule
A sample schedule is shown below. Preliminary Interns will have the opportunity to work at each of the three hospitals that comprise our medical center including UH, VA Hospital, and Cooper Green Hospital. Nine months are spent in the inpatient setting and three are spent in the outpatient setting. As shown below, 3-4 months are spent on General Medicine Wards, with a minimum of one month at each of our three hospitals. Another 2-3 months are spent on UH subspecialty wards which include Nephrology, Pulmonary, Hematology/Oncology, and GI/Liver Services.
